Gifts for new parents who miss reading
Their hands are full and their eyes are shut. Audiobooks are the one kind of reading that survives a newborn — here is how to give them well, and the case where you should not.

The friend who used to read two books a week now has a baby and a pile of unopened novels. It is a specific, recognizable loss, and it is one of the few things a gift can actually fix — because audiobooks are the one kind of reading that survives night feeds, pram walks and the hour spent standing in a dark room. This page is for the person buying the gift, and it starts with the mistake to avoid.
The mistake: buying a subscription for a first-timer
The obvious present is a few months of Audible. It is generous, and for someone who has never had Audible it is the wrong gift. Audible's own page says each plan offers a 30-day free trial to new members. A gifted membership makes your friend a member, so assume it uses that up — you would be paying for something they could have had free, and leaving them without the month of no-strings listening that is the best way to find out whether the format suits them. The same logic applies to Kindle Unlimited, whose trial Amazon describes as being for eligible customers.
What to give instead, by budget
- Nothing. The free Audible trial — 30 days for new customers, converting to $8.99 a month unless canceled — sent as a proper gift: a first book chosen for them, one line about why, and the conversion date written large, because a new parent will not remember it.
- A book they keep. A single Audible title — “yours to keep, even if you cancel your membership”, in Audible's wording — chosen for the circumstances. Something that survives interruption, since every session will be interrupted; our beginners' guide describes what that looks like.
- Credits that never expire. A Libro.fm bundle — its gift page on 14 September 2026 started at $30.00 for two credits, and states credits “never expire and can be redeemed on any audiobook, regardless of price”. For someone with no predictable free time, the no-expiry part is the point. Unaffiliated; we earn nothing.
- A stretch of membership, if and only if they already subscribe. Then you are paying a bill they were paying, and the gift lands cleanly. Audible's gift center is where that lives; its page body was not readable to us on 14 September 2026, so the options and prices are ones to check there.
The feature to point them at
The sleep timer. It stops playback after a set number of minutes, so a parent who dozes off mid-chapter at 3am does not wake to find the book six hours ahead. It is in the Audible app and most others, and it is the difference between listening that works in a nursery and listening that does not. Our page on audiobooks for sleep covers the timer and the kind of book that suits it. The second feature is downloading: Audible's app listing describes offline listening, and a phone with three books already on it is a phone that gets used in the dark without a thought.
The free version, which is also good
A public library card set up in Libby lends audiobooks at no cost — its help page says all you need is a library card — and setting it up for a new parent is a gift of the hour they do not have. How to borrow from your library is the walkthrough. We are paid nothing when someone uses it, and for a lot of parents it is enough on its own.
For the reader rather than the listener
Some new parents do still read — one-handed, on a phone, during a feed. For them, Kindle books they keep or, if they already subscribe, a gifted Kindle Unlimited stretch (Amazon confirms 6-, 12- and 24-month options) fits. For a first-timer, again, the trial: try Kindle Unlimited free, with the length and price shown on Amazon's own signup page. Gifts for book lovers who read on a Kindle has the detail.
Later, when the baby is older
The gift eventually turns around: the child becomes the listener. Both programs have household arrangements — see sharing Audible with family and Kindle Unlimited for kids — and audiobooks for kids covers what suits which age. Not a newborn gift; a note for the second birthday.
