What Kindle Unlimited includes
A defined catalog inside the Kindle Store, not the store itself. The difference between those two things is where nearly all the disappointment comes from.

The single most useful sentence about Kindle Unlimited is that it is a defined catalog inside the Kindle Store rather than the Kindle Store itself. Everything people find surprising about it follows from that: why a book you searched for is not in it, why the selection feels different from a bookshop, and why two readers can have completely opposite experiences of the same subscription.
Kindle Unlimited: what we could verify
Verified 11 August 2026
| Cost per month | Not published in a page we can read — see below |
|---|---|
| Free trial | A trial exists for eligible customers; the length is not stated on the page we checked |
| Who can take it | Amazon's help page says a free trial is available to eligible customers, and that you need an Amazon account with a current, valid payment method to use the subscription. Amazon does not publish the full eligibility rule in the pages we can read, so check what your own account is offered at signup. |
Checked against Amazon's help page, Understanding the Kindle Unlimited Subscription and Benefits on 11 August 2026. How we check these.
What we could not confirm
- The monthly price. Amazon renders it in JavaScript on the signup page, and the Kindle Unlimited Terms of Use did not state a figure in the content we could retrieve. We are not going to print a number we could not read on an Amazon page, so this site shows the price as something to check at signup.
- The length of the free trial. Amazon's help page confirms a trial exists for eligible customers but does not state how long it runs, and the length has historically varied by account and by promotion.
- The size of the catalog. Amazon does not publish a figure we could confirm, and it states that the catalog changes at any time.
Ebooks
The core of the offering. Inclusion is set by whether a publisher or author enrolled a title, which is why the catalog skews toward independently published work — romance, thriller, fantasy, science fiction, cozy mystery are all well served. Large traditional publishers have historically kept much of their catalog out, so if your reading list is drawn from mainstream review coverage you will find gaps. Amazon also states explicitly that the titles in the catalog can change at any time, so a book being in it today is not a promise about next month.
Narrated titles
Some titles include narration alongside the ebook, marked with a headset icon on the book's page. Useful, and frequently misunderstood as an audiobook subscription. It is a subset, not a catalog you can choose from freely, and it is not Audible — the full picture is on audiobooks on Kindle Unlimited.
Magazines, and the 2026 change
Magazines are included, but the terms changed materially this year and a lot of pages still describe the old arrangement. Amazon states that from 22 April 2026 each magazine issue you borrow counts toward the 20-title borrow limit, that new issues are no longer delivered automatically, and that where members previously could borrow up to 50 issues, accounts holding more than 20 borrowed titles would have the excess returned automatically from 30 July 2026.
Amazon also notes a platform quirk worth knowing: magazines can be borrowed in the Kindle app for Android, the Amazon shopping app for Android, or a mobile or desktop browser, but not directly from the Amazon iOS shopping app or on an e-reader. Downloaded issues can then be read in the Kindle app on any device.
What is not included
Books you buy from the Kindle Store outright — those remain purchases and stay yours. Audible's catalog. And anything a rights holder has chosen not to enroll, which is a large and moving set. Because nothing you borrow becomes yours, the whole catalog disappears when you stop paying, which makes Kindle Unlimited a rental relationship rather than a library you are building. That is worth being clear-eyed about before a long subscription.
Advertising disclosure · we are paid for this
We get a flat fee if you start a qualifying trial through this link. It costs you nothing extra, it does not change what we conclude on this page, and the full disclosure is here.
Browse the catalog before you commit
Filtering the Kindle Store to Kindle Unlimited titles is the honest way to see what your membership would actually cover.
#ad · The offer you see is whatever Amazon is running at the moment you click, which is why we send you to look rather than printing a number that could be out of date. What we checked, and when, is on how we research. Terms last verified 11 August 2026.
