Audible

Audible is Amazon's audiobook membership. Paying monthly gets you two separate things, and telling them apart explains most of what people find confusing: a catalog you can listen to for as long as you are a member, and, on the higher plan, credits you spend on individual audiobooks that then stay in your library.

There are two plans. Audible Standard is listed at $8.99 and Audible Premium Plus at $14.95, and both carry a 30 days free trial for new members. The gap between the two prices is what a credit costs you, which makes the plan decision unusually simple to reason about: if you will reliably spend a credit each month on a book you would otherwise have bought, the credit plan wins. If you will not, it does not.

What we can and cannot tell you

The prices and trial terms on this site came off Audible's own pricing block, and the date we read them is printed next to them. Some things we deliberately do not state: the credit allowance per plan and how long an unused credit lasts. Audible's detailed plan pages redirect into an Amazon sign-in, so those numbers are not readable on a public page, and we are not going to repeat figures from review sites that may be years old. Where you see a gap on this site, the gap is the honest answer — our method explains why.

If you already know you want it, the free trial page covers what you get and, more importantly, exactly what happens on the day it ends. The thing most people get wrong

Audible and Kindle Unlimited are different subscriptions with different catalogs, and holding one gives you nothing on the other. Amazon owns both and signs you into both with the same account, which makes the mistake extremely easy to make and moderately expensive to discover.
