How does Audible work?

Audible is a monthly membership, not a shop you visit. Paying gets you two different things at once, and telling them apart is most of what you need to understand: a catalog you can listen to for as long as you are a member, and, on the higher plan, credits you spend on individual audiobooks that then belong to you.

The two plans

Audible's pricing block lists Audible Standard at $8.99 and Audible Premium Plus at $14.95. Both come with a 30 days free trial for new members.

What a credit is

A credit buys one audiobook, whatever that audiobook costs. It is not a discount and not a fixed dollar value, which is the detail that decides whether the system works in your favor. Spend credits on expensive titles and you come out well ahead of retail; spend them on cheap ones and you have paid over the odds. Where you listen

Audible is an app on a phone or tablet, a browser player, and it is supported on Amazon's own devices. In practice most listening happens on a phone with headphones or through a car's stereo, which is why the service's value tracks so closely with how much commuting or walking you do. Audible's detailed plan pages sit behind an Amazon sign-in, which means several things people routinely ask about — the exact credit allowance per plan, how long an unused credit lasts, and the current catalog size — are not readable on a public page. We have not filled those gaps with numbers from elsewhere. Where you see a figure on this site, it came from a page we could actually open, and the date we opened it is printed alongside.
