The Audible free trial, and what actually happens when it ends

What Audible actually says

We are quoting rather than paraphrasing here, because the paraphrase is where this normally goes wrong. Audible's own page states:

Two things follow from that. First, the trial is not a lesser version of the product — Audible describes trial members as getting the same benefits as paying ones, so a trial is a fair way to judge whether the service suits you. Second, the conversion to paid is automatic and unprompted, which means the only reliable protection is your own calendar.

Which plan you should start the trial on

Audible lists two plans: Audible Standard at $8.99 and Audible Premium Plus at $14.95. The gap between them is what you get for the extra money each month, and the honest answer is that it depends entirely on whether you spend the credit.

If you are the kind of reader who will pick one specific, expensive audiobook a month and actually finish it, the credit-bearing plan is the one to test, because a credit is worth whatever the book costs rather than a fixed discount. Does the trial pay for itself?

For a subscription this is arithmetic, not opinion. Put in what a typical audiobook on your list costs to buy outright and how many you genuinely finish in a month, and the sum tells you whether a membership is cheaper than just buying them.

The number that matters is not the one we would pick for you. It is the number of books you finish, not the number you start, and most people overestimate it. If the arithmetic says the subscription only wins when you finish two or three a month and you know you finish one, the honest conclusion is that a membership is a convenience purchase rather than a saving — which is fine, as long as you are buying it knowingly.

How to leave before you are billed

Skip the trial if you have held an Audible membership before, because you are probably not eligible and the signup will simply charge you.
