Audible and Kindle Unlimited: common questions

Common questions
Is Kindle Unlimited the same as Audible?
No. They are separate Amazon subscriptions with separate catalogs and separate monthly fees. Kindle Unlimited is an ebook borrowing subscription; Audible is an audiobook membership. Holding one gives you nothing on the other.
How much does Audible cost per month?
Audible's own page states that Audible Standard is $8.99 per month and Audible Premium Plus is $14.95 per month. We verified that wording on 11 August 2026. Prices change, so the figure shown to you at signup governs.
How much does Kindle Unlimited cost per month?
We do not publish a figure, because we could not read one on an Amazon page. Amazon renders the price in JavaScript on its signup page, and the Terms of Use page did not state it in retrievable content. Check the price shown against your own Amazon account at signup.
How long is the Audible free trial?
Audible states that each plan offers a 30-day free trial to new members, verified on 11 August 2026. Amazon runs promotions that can replace the standard trial, so the offer shown at signup is the one that applies to you.
How long is the Kindle Unlimited free trial?
Amazon confirms a free trial exists for eligible customers but does not state the length on the help page we can read, and it has varied by account and promotion. Read the length on the signup screen rather than trusting a number from an article.
Do free trials charge me automatically?
Yes, both of them. Audible states you are automatically charged a monthly subscription fee when the trial is over. Amazon states that at the end of a Kindle Unlimited trial you are automatically converted to a monthly paid plan. Neither prompts you first, so set a calendar reminder the day you sign up.
Is Audible free with Amazon Prime?
No. Audible is a separate paid membership with its own fee. Prime does not include it, although Amazon sometimes runs Prime-linked promotions that appear at signup.
Does Kindle Unlimited come with Prime?
No. Kindle Unlimited is a separate paid subscription. Prime includes its own reading benefit, which draws on a different and smaller catalog.
Does Kindle Unlimited include audiobooks?
Partly. Some Kindle Unlimited titles include narration, marked with a 'with Narration' headset icon on the Kindle book page. It is not a general audiobook subscription and it does not include Audible's catalog.
How many books can you borrow on Kindle Unlimited at once?
Up to 20 titles at a time, with no due dates, according to Amazon's help page. Magazine issues have counted toward that same limit since 22 April 2026.
Are all Kindle books included in Kindle Unlimited?
No. It is a defined catalog inside the Kindle Store rather than the whole store. It is deepest in independently published genre fiction and thinnest on mainstream traditionally published titles, and Amazon states the catalog can change at any time.
Do I keep books after canceling?
It depends on the service. Audible titles bought with a credit or with money generally stay in your library; catalog listening ends with the membership. Everything on Kindle Unlimited is borrowed, so all of it goes back when the subscription stops.
What is an Audible credit worth?
Whatever the audiobook you spend it on costs. It is not a fixed amount or a percentage off, which makes it excellent value on expensive titles and poor value on cheap ones.
Is Audible worth it?
It depends on how many audiobooks you finish each month and what they cost to buy. Divide the monthly fee by the price of one audiobook and you have the number of books a month at which the subscription starts saving you money. Below that number it does not.
Is Kindle Unlimited worth it?
Two tests, and most articles only run one. First, are the books you actually read in the catalog? Search five titles from your list and count. Second, do you read enough of them to clear the monthly fee? Both have to pass.
Can I get audiobooks for free?
Yes. Most US public libraries lend audiobooks free through Libby, and volunteer projects like LibriVox produce free recordings of public-domain books. Neither pays this site anything, and for many readers they cover everything.
How do I cancel these subscriptions?
Audible is canceled from Account Details on the Audible website rather than in the mobile app. Kindle Unlimited is canceled from Manage Your Kindle Unlimited Membership on Amazon. In both cases the membership normally runs to the end of the period already paid for.
Am I eligible for a free trial if I subscribed before?
Usually not. These offers are generally limited to new customers of the program, which is also how the fee that funds this site works. If you have subscribed before, assume you are not eligible until the signup page tells you otherwise.
How do you make money, and does it change your advice?
We are paid a flat fee by Amazon when someone starts a qualifying free trial through our links, at no extra cost to you. It does not change our verdicts: several pages here recommend a free library card, which pays us nothing, and some conclude you should not subscribe at all.
Have you listened to the audiobooks you write about?
No, and we do not claim to have. There is no test lab and no narrator opinions here. What we do instead is read the actual program terms, check them against the company's own pages, print the date of every check, publish what we could not verify, and show the arithmetic.
