Kindle Unlimited is a borrowing subscription for ebooks. While your membership is active you can hold up to 20 titles at a time, there are no due dates, and you return something when you want to borrow something else. Nothing you borrow becomes yours, and everything goes back when the subscription stops.
The single most useful thing to understand is that Kindle Unlimited is a defined catalog inside the Kindle Store, not the store itself. Inclusion depends on whether a rights holder enrolled a title, which produces a catalog that is deep in independently published genre fiction — romance, thriller, fantasy, science fiction, cozy mystery — and comparatively thin on mainstream traditionally published books. Two readers can therefore have completely opposite experiences of the same subscription, and both be right.
The five-minute test
Before you read another word about value, do this: write down the next five books you intend to read, search each in the Kindle Store, and count how many carry the Kindle Unlimited badge. If four or five are included, the subscription is aimed at you. If one is, no monthly price makes it worthwhile.
