Is Kindle Unlimited worth it for students?

Students get sold subscriptions constantly, usually on the implication that a big catalog and a coursework reading list are the same kind of thing. They are not, and the mismatch is the single most useful thing to understand before spending anything.

Why the reading list is the wrong test

Academic and set texts are the highest-margin part of publishing and the least likely to be enrolled in an all-you-can-read subscription. The economics are straightforward: a publisher with a captive market of students required to buy a specific edition has no reason to put it in a borrowing catalog.

So the realistic expectation is that your reading list will not be there. You can confirm this in ten minutes rather than taking our word for it — look up five titles from your actual list on their own Kindle pages, using the method on how to check what is in the catalog. If four are included, ignore everything else on this page and subscribe. In our experience of how these catalogs are composed, that is not the usual result.

Where it genuinely does work for a student

• Reading around the subject. The books nobody set you but which make the ones they did set make sense. Popular treatments, histories, biographies, general non-fiction — this is the part of a reading habit an academic library is worst at supporting quickly and a broad catalog is decent at.
• Reading that is not work. Genre fiction in the evening, which is where this catalog is deepest, and which matters more to getting through a degree than the reading lists suggest.
• Reading on a phone in gaps. Amazon states the subscription works on any device through the free Kindle app, so twenty minutes between lectures is usable time without carrying anything.

The two free things to do first

1. Your university library's digital lending. It is included in fees you have already paid, it carries the academic titles a consumer subscription will not, and most students use a fraction of what it offers. Ask a librarian what the digital holdings actually cover; the answer is usually surprising.
2. A public library card. Separate from your university and covering completely different ground — mainstream published fiction and non-fiction, free, through Libby. Setup is on how to borrow from your library, and we are paid nothing when you do it.

Do both, use them for a term, and then decide. A student who has exhausted two library systems and still wants more is exactly the person a subscription suits. A student who has not opened either is not going to be rescued by a third source of books.

If you do subscribe, subscribe in term time

There is no lock-in here, and treating the subscription as seasonal is entirely reasonable. Subscribe when you have reading to do, cancel over the summer, resubscribe in October.
