Audible and Kindle Unlimited discounts: what is real and what is not
There is no teacher rate, no military rate and no senior rate published on any page we can read. There are two genuine discounted routes, and both of them run through Prime rather than through the subscriptions themselves.

New customers only. 30 days free, then it renews automatically at the monthly rate shown at signup unless you cancel first. Terms verified 17 September 2026.
Free trial for eligible customers. Amazon shows the length and the price on the signup page, and the trial converts to a paid month automatically unless you cancel. Terms verified 14 September 2026.

People search for an Audible teacher discount, an Audible military discount, a Kindle Unlimited student rate and a senior rate, in large numbers and every month. Here is the honest summary before the detail: none of those four is published on any Amazon or Audible page we can read. Two genuinely discounted routes do exist, both of them are real and verifiable, and neither is a discount on the subscriptions themselves.
What we checked, and what we found
On 17 September 2026 we read Audible's own Plans & Pricing page in full. It lists four plans — two monthly, two annual — and no reduced rate for any occupation, age group or service status. We also requested audible.com/ep/students, the URL most frequently cited as the student-rate page. It resolves to Audible's general landing page, with the same plans and promotions everybody else sees and nothing student-specific on it.
On the Kindle Unlimited side, Amazon's help page answered with an HTTP 403 that day, as it does most days. Nothing in our last successful read of it, on 14 September 2026, mentions a discounted rate for anybody — and Amazon does not publish the standard Kindle Unlimited price on that page either, which is why this site has never printed one.
Prime Access: the one that most people miss
This is the largest genuine discount in the whole Amazon reading ecosystem and it is barely discussed in audiobook coverage. Amazon sells a reduced-price Prime membership called Prime Access. Its own page states, verbatim, that Prime is “just $14.99 $6.99/month for eligible government assistance recipients or income verified customers”, with a 30-day free trial and the same benefits as full-price Prime.
Amazon lists two qualification routes. The first is household income at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guideline, checked by a third-party verification partner. The second is enrolment in one of a long list of assistance programs, which Amazon publishes in full:
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
- SNAP
- Medicaid
- Direct Express Debit Card
- Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
- National School Lunch Program (NSLP)
- Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
- Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)
- Tribal Assistance Eligibility Letter
- Puerto Rico's Nutrition Assistance Program (NAP)
- Federal Public Housing Assistance
- Veterans & Survivors Pension Benefits
- Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)
Two entries on that list are worth flagging because they answer questions people ask in other words. Veterans' and survivors' pension benefits appear on it, which is the closest thing to a veteran discount anywhere in this ecosystem. So does SSDI, and so does Medicaid — between them the nearest thing to a disability or senior rate. None of them is a discount on Audible. All of them are a discount on the membership that Audible's best offers are attached to.
Prime for Young Adults: the student route, renamed
What used to be searched for as the Prime Student discount is now published as Prime for Young Adults. Amazon's own page states a six-month trial at $0 for “18-24 year-olds and students”, after which the membership auto-renews at $7.49 a month or $69 a year — half the standard $14.99 monthly and $139 annual rates shown on the same page.
Six months of Prime at no cost is a materially better offer than anything on the audiobook side, and it is the correct first move for anybody in that age bracket. What it does not do is make Audible or Kindle Unlimited free, and assuming otherwise is the most common expensive mistake in this category — what Prime actually includes takes that apart properly. Our own pages on Audible for students and Kindle Unlimited for students cover the rest of the student-specific picture.
The indirect discount that is running right now
Here is where the Prime route loops back to audiobooks. Amazon periodically runs Prime-member-exclusive Audible offers, and one was live on Audible's own site when we checked. The current-offer row in the terms table below renders straight from what we read on Audible's page, with the end date Audible stated, and it disappears on its own once that date passes rather than sitting here going stale.
The mechanism is worth understanding even when no offer is running, because it is the pattern: the discount attaches to Prime membership, not to a profession or an age. Somebody on Prime Access is therefore two steps away from the cheapest Audible rate Amazon publishes — half-price Prime, then whatever Prime-exclusive audiobook offer is current. That is a genuinely useful thing to know and almost nobody writes it down.
Audible Premium Plus: what we could verify
Verified 17 September 2026
| Cost per month | $14.95 |
|---|---|
| Free trial | 30 days |
| Who can take it | New members only. Audible's own wording is that each plan offers a 30-day free trial to new members, and that eligible new members can sign up for a free trial anytime. Audible's help center adds one published window, read 24 August 2026: you will not be eligible for a free 30-day trial if you have already taken advantage of it within the last 12 months. That states an exclusion rather than a promise, so treat twelve months as the earliest point worth checking again. |
| Current promotion | Prime members only, re-read on Audible's own site on 27 September 2026: Audible Standard at $0.99 a month for 4 months plus a $20 Audible credit, auto-renewing at $8.99 a month afterwards, offer ends October 7, 2026 at 11:59PM PT. The $20 credit was added to Audible's own banner between our 17 September and 27 September reads; the rate, the renewal rate and the end date are unchanged. This is a discounted paid membership from day one, not a longer free trial, and Audible's page does not say whether taking it uses up new-member trial eligibility. The standard 30-day free trial was still offered beside it. |
Checked against Audible's own membership pricing block on 17 September 2026. How we check these.
What we could not confirm
- Whether either annual plan carries the 30-day free trial. The two monthly rows on Audible's Plans & Pricing page say 'Try for $0.00' and name the trial; the two annual rows say only 'Auto-renews at ... Cancel anytime.' Audible does not state either way, so neither do we.
- The size of the listening catalog. Catalog counts are marketing figures that change constantly and we could not confirm one against a dated source.
Promotional rates are not discounts, and behave differently
Black Friday, Prime Day and new-member promotions are the other thing people mean when they search for a discount, and they follow different rules: they are time-limited, usually new-customer-only, and they convert to the standard rate on a stated date. We keep what we can actually verify about those on promo codes and longer free trials and, for the November window specifically, on the Black Friday hub, which records what discounted in past years with dates and sources rather than predicting this one.
The discount nobody needs to qualify for
It is worth ending where the money actually is. A library card costs nothing, requires no verification and no profession, and lends audiobooks and ebooks through Libby at a price no membership rate will ever beat. We are paid nothing when you use it. For a large share of the people searching for a teacher rate or a senior rate, the honest answer is that the discount they were looking for is 100% and it is already in their wallet — borrowing from your library covers how to set it up, and the cheapest ways to listen ranks every route by real cost.
After that comes the free trial, used on purpose: sign up, finish something inside the window, cancel before it converts. That is not a discount either, strictly, but it is the only way to get a month of either service for nothing — and if the signup page refuses you one, why the free trial will not start lists the causes Audible actually publishes.

What your own account is offered is the version that counts
Rates, promotions and eligibility are decided against your account at signup, not by an article. That is the whole reason this page sends you to look rather than printing a number we could not read. Terms and the date we checked them are on our Audible free trial page and Kindle Unlimited free trial page.
New customers only. 30 days free, then it renews automatically at the monthly rate shown at signup unless you cancel first. Terms verified 17 September 2026.
#ad · The button goes straight to Audible's own free-trial signup page. The offer you see there is whatever Audible is running at the moment you click, which is why we send you to look rather than printing a number that could be out of date. What we checked, and when, is on how we research.
