Reading glasses resting on a stack of notebooks with pens

Most of this site's genre pages end up explaining why a category is unexpectedly well covered. This one goes the other way. If your reading is mainly non-fiction — history, science, biography, the books people are discussing this year — Kindle Unlimited is likely to disappoint you, and it is better to know that before paying than after.

Why the catalog is thin here

The same mechanism that makes romance and fantasy deep makes non-fiction shallow. The catalog fills with independently published work, and serious non-fiction is overwhelmingly traditionally published. Research-heavy books take years, need editorial and legal support, and are financed by advances — a model that has little use for a subscription paying by pages read.

So the shelf you are picturing when you think “non-fiction” — the acclaimed history, the science book everyone quotes, the major biography — is largely somewhere else. Not as an oversight, but because those publishers have no reason to be here.

What genuinely is there

One large exception, and it is a real one. Practical non-fiction publishes independently in enormous volume, and the catalog reflects that:

  • Business and self-improvement. Productivity, marketing, side businesses, habits. The deepest non-fiction category here by a distance.
  • Practical how-to. Gardening, home repair, crafts, hobbies, keeping chickens. Genuinely useful and genuinely plentiful.
  • Cookery. A large independent scene, though photo-led cookbooks read poorly on an e-ink screen.
  • Personal finance. Well covered, with the caveat below about advice from unvetted sources.

If that is what you read, the subscription works about as well as it does for fiction readers in the strong genres. Several practical titles a month is a reading habit the arithmetic on whether Kindle Unlimited is worth it treats kindly.

Students, briefly

Academic texts are not part of this catalog. University publishing runs on its own licensing, and a student subscribing in the hope of finding course books will not find them. What the subscription can do for a student is supply reading around a subject rather than for it — Kindle Unlimited for students sets out what it realistically covers.

Where to look instead

Your public library, without much competition. Traditionally published non-fiction is precisely what library collections are built around, and it costs nothing. Ebook lending through Libby covers current non-fiction well, and holds are shorter than on bestselling fiction. How to borrow from your library is the setup, and Kindle Unlimited versus Libby is the honest head-to-head, which for non-fiction readers the library wins comfortably.

None of that earns us anything, which is exactly why it is on the page rather than in a footnote. A subscription taken out for books it does not contain gets canceled in a month, and the reader is right to cancel it.

The five-book test still applies

Write down five non-fiction books you actually want to read next, and check each one before subscribing. In this category the result is usually stark: either you read practical independent non-fiction and most of them are there, or you do not and almost none are. Either way you will know in five minutes, using the catalog check.

If practical non-fiction is what you actually read

That is the corner of this category the catalog serves well. Check five titles you want first — if four are included, a trial tests the habit against your own account. If one is, your library is the better answer and we would rather you used it.

Common questions

Is Kindle Unlimited good for non-fiction?
Less than for fiction. Practical and self-published non-fiction is well represented; the traditionally published narrative non-fiction, biography, history and science that dominate bestseller lists mostly is not.
What kind of non-fiction is actually on there?
Business and self-improvement, practical how-to, hobby and craft guides, cookery, personal finance and a large amount of short-form independent writing. Almost all of it independently published.
Are textbooks included?
Not as a rule. Academic publishing has its own licensing models and is not part of this catalog, so a student should not subscribe expecting course texts.
Is the quality reliable?
It varies more than in fiction, because non-fiction makes claims. An unedited business book can be confidently wrong in a way an unedited novel cannot. Check the author's background before taking advice from a title you found in a subscription catalog.
Where should I look instead?
Your public library. Traditionally published non-fiction is exactly what libraries buy heavily, and it costs nothing.
