Do you need a Kindle to use Kindle Unlimited?

This is the question that stops a surprising number of people subscribing, and it has a one-word answer. Amazon's own help page states that “you can access Kindle Unlimited on any Kindle device, smartphone, computer, or tablet through the free Kindle app”. No hardware purchase is involved. The name is the source of the confusion, and the name is doing you a disservice.

What you are actually subscribing to

Kindle Unlimited is a borrowing entitlement attached to your Amazon account. Amazon's help page describes it as being able to “borrow up to 20 titles at a time from a wide selection of genres, all with no due dates”. Nothing in that sentence is about a device. The Kindle app is simply the reader that opens what you have borrowed, and Amazon gives it away on every platform it can.

The devices, and what each one is actually good at

• Phone. Always with you, which means it captures the ten-minute gaps that otherwise go to nothing. It is also the device most likely to interrupt you. Most subscribers read more on a phone than they expect to and enjoy it less than they expect to.
• Tablet. Comfortable for illustrated books, comics and anything with a layout — which is why it is the right device for the categories covered on manga and comics on Kindle Unlimited and the magazine change.
• E-reader. E-ink, no notifications, readable in sunlight, a battery measured in weeks. For a heavy reader this is a genuine quality-of-life purchase. It is not a requirement, and buying one to “make the subscription work” is the wrong reason.
• Computer. Fine for reference, poor for reading. Useful mainly for managing your borrows and returns on a bigger screen.

Where a borrow goes when you press the button

Kindle Unlimited borrows are delivered to a device you choose, which catches people out when they borrow on a laptop and expect it on the e-reader in another room. It generally arrives eventually via sync, but the delivery target is a choice at the point of borrowing and is worth setting deliberately.

Reading position syncs across devices on the same account, so alternating between a phone at lunch and a tablet at night works without you managing anything. The narration question, briefly

Some Kindle Unlimited titles include narration, which changes what “device” means — you are suddenly choosing headphones as well as a screen. Amazon says these are marked: “look for the ‘with Narration’ (headset) icon on the Kindle book pages”. One thing a device will not fix

If the books you want are not in the catalog, no amount of hardware helps. Amazon is explicit that “titles in the Kindle Unlimited catalog can change at any time”, and the single most useful thing to do before subscribing is to check five books you actually want to read.
