Giving Audible as a gift

Gifting a subscription feels generous and occasionally is. But it is the kind of present where the mechanics matter, because you can spend real money and hand someone something slightly worse than what they could have had for nothing. It is worth two minutes of thought before you buy.

The trap, stated plainly

Audible's free trial is described on its own page as being for new members: “each plan offers a 30-day free trial to new members”. New is a status you have once. If a gifted membership makes your recipient a member, the free trial they could have taken themselves is likely gone — and you have paid for something they would have been given.

So the first question is not “which gift” but “has this person ever had Audible?”. If they have, the eligibility question is already settled and a gift is a perfectly sensible present. The three things people actually mean by this

• “I want to introduce them to audiobooks.” Then the trial is the gift. Send them a link, tell them what to listen to first, and tell them to set a reminder to cancel. It costs you nothing and gives them more control than a prepaid block would.
• “I want to give them a specific book.” Then give the title, not the membership. It is permanent, it is priced clearly, it does not expire, and it does not consume their eligibility for anything.
• “They already love Audible and I want to cover some months.” This is the case a gift membership genuinely fits. They are already a member, the eligibility question is moot, and you are simply paying their bill for a while.

Why a single title is underrated

A gifted audiobook has properties a subscription does not. It does not run out. It does not require the recipient to remember to cancel anything. It carries a specific choice you made about them, which is most of the point of a present. And it sits in their library permanently — Audible's wording on purchased titles is that they are “yours to keep forever”.

A subscription, by contrast, is a commitment with an end date attached to somebody else's calendar. If they are busy for the three months you paid for, the gift is largely wasted, and there is a decent chance they feel obliged to tell you they loved it.

What to tell the recipient

Whatever you give, pass on two pieces of information with it. First, that the arrangement may convert to a paid subscription at some point and they should check the membership settings on their own account when it arrives. Second, that anything bought with a credit is theirs permanently, while access to the included catalog lasts as long as the membership does — the distinction is set out on included titles versus credit purchases, and it is the difference between a gift that leaves a shelf behind and one that leaves nothing.
