Last-minute gifts for readers and listeners
It is the night before. Everything on this page is digital, arrives by email, and can be sent from the sofa — including one that costs nothing and is still a good present.

The advantage of buying for a reader at the last minute is that the best gifts in this category never needed a box. The disadvantage is that the pressure of the hour pushes people toward the wrong one — the subscription that looks generous and quietly removes something the recipient could have had for free. Here is the list, in the order we would actually go through it, with what each one needs from you.
Option one: the free trial, sent as a present
If the person has never had Audible or Kindle Unlimited, the trial is the right introduction and it costs you nothing. Audible's own page says each plan offers a 30-day free trial to new members, converting to a paid month unless canceled; Amazon says a Kindle Unlimited trial is available if eligible, with the length and price shown on its signup page. What turns a link into a gift is the note: a first book chosen for them, the reason you chose it, and the date it converts.
You can send the Audible trial for a listener or the Kindle Unlimited trial for a reader. If you are not sure which, Audible vs Kindle Unlimited is a five-minute read and Start here is a shorter one.
Option two: a title they keep
A single book, chosen for them, delivered tonight. On Audible, a purchased title is “yours to keep, even if you cancel your membership” in Audible's own words; a Kindle book is likewise permanent in their library. This is the gift with the fewest strings: nothing expires, nothing renews, nothing needs canceling. It also needs the most thought, which at the last minute is the scarce resource — if you do not know what they read, the credit options below let them choose.
Option three: credits or a gift card
- Libro.fm. Its gift page, read 14 September 2026, lists credit bundles from 2 credits at $30.00 to 24 credits at $360.00, states that “credits never expire and can be redeemed on any audiobook, regardless of price”, and that you can “send your gift instantly or schedule your gift delivery” — the scheduling matters when you are early rather than late. Purchases support an independent bookshop the recipient chooses. We are not affiliated with Libro.fm.
- Chirp. Sells discounted audiobooks one at a time with no subscription, by its own description, and lists gift cards in its navigation. Suits someone who buys rather than subscribes. Unaffiliated; amounts are set on its site.
- Audible. Audible's gift center exists and its navigation lists “Gifts”, but the page body renders in JavaScript and we could not read the options, delivery methods or prices on 14 September 2026. Check it while signed in.
Option four: a gifted subscription, for someone who already subscribes
For a reader who already pays for Kindle Unlimited, Amazon's help page confirms you can give it “as a gift, choosing between 6-, 12-, and 24-month options”; the price is shown at purchase rather than on any page we can read. For a listener who already pays for Audible, the gift center is the place, with the same caveat about what we could read. Both are good presents on that one condition — that they already subscribe — and both are described from the recipient's side on giving Kindle Unlimited as a gift and giving Audible as a gift.
One that is off the list: Everand. Scribd's help center, in an article updated 26 March 2026 and read on 14 September 2026, says purchasing a gift subscription is currently unavailable.
The five-minute version
- Do they already subscribe to something? Ask, or ask their household.
- If no: send the trial, with a first book and the conversion date. Spend the money on a title they keep.
- If yes: a stretch of that membership, or credits for that store. Credits in the wrong store are useless.
- Do not know what they read? Credits, not a title. Libro.fm credits redeem on any audiobook regardless of price.
- Write the note. It is the part that makes any of the above a present rather than a receipt.

#ad · The button goes straight to Audible's own free-trial signup page. The offer you see there is whatever Audible is running at the moment you click, which is why we send you to look rather than printing a number that could be out of date. What we checked, and when, is on how we research.
