Reading and listening to the same book, in turns

There is a specific kind of reader this exists for: someone who reads for twenty minutes in bed, drives for forty minutes in the morning, and wants those to be the same book. Amazon supports that, in a limited and slightly buried way, and understanding the shape of it saves both money and disappointment.

What the pairing actually is

Certain Kindle ebooks have a matching Audible audiobook edition that Amazon links together. Own both, and your furthest position carries between them — close the book at chapter nine, press play in the car, and you start at chapter nine. It is not text-to-speech and it is not a robot voice; it is the professionally narrated edition, synchronised to the text you own.

Two constraints matter more than any of the marketing. First, it is per title: some books have a paired edition and many do not, and there is no way to tell in advance except by looking at the title. Second, it is a purchase, not a membership benefit. Nothing about being an Audible member or a Kindle Unlimited subscriber grants it.

The thing it is constantly confused with

Kindle Unlimited contains some titles that come with narration included. That is a different mechanism and it is worth keeping separate in your head. Amazon's own help page describes how to find them: “to find Kindle Unlimited audiobooks, look for the ‘with Narration’ (headset) icon on the Kindle book pages, or browse the Kindle Unlimited store and filter by audiobooks”.

So there are three separate things wearing similar clothes: narration bundled into a Kindle Unlimited borrow, a paired ebook-and-audiobook purchase, and an Audible membership. Who this is actually worth money for

• Commuters who read at home. The classic case. If your reading is genuinely split across two settings every day, the pairing removes the friction that otherwise makes people abandon one of the two formats.
• Slow readers of long books. A nine-hundred-page novel that takes three months in print takes considerably less if half of it happens while you are doing something else.

Who it is not for: anyone who reads some books and listens to others. That is most people, and for them the pairing is a feature bought and never used. The honest test is whether you have ever, once, wanted to continue a specific book in the other format and been stopped by the hassle. If you cannot remember an occasion, you are not the buyer.

The free version of the same idea

You can approximate this for nothing with two library loans. Borrow the ebook and the audiobook of the same title through Libby and you can switch formats freely — you just have to find your own place, which for most books is a matter of remembering roughly where you were. It is clumsier and it costs nothing, and for a reader doing this once or twice a year it is plainly the better deal.
