What is actually worth reading on Kindle Unlimited

The useful question is not which hundred books are currently included. It is whether the kind of reading you do is the kind this catalog is built out of — and that has a stable answer, because it follows from how publishing works rather than from this month's enrolments.

Where the catalog is genuinely deep

• Romance, in all its subgenres. The strongest category by a distance, for reasons set out on romance on Kindle Unlimited.
• Thriller, mystery and cosy crime. Long series, prolific authors, and readers who get through several a month. A natural fit.
• Science fiction and fantasy, especially series. Military SF, space opera, progression fantasy and litRPG are almost entirely an independent-publishing phenomenon and are very well represented.
• Practical and self-published non-fiction. Business, self-improvement, hobby and how-to material. Enormously variable in quality and enormously plentiful.

Where it is thin, and why

Literary fiction, prize shortlists, prominent narrative non-fiction, major biographies, academic work and the children's classics are all largely absent. The reason is the same in every case: these are traditionally published, their publishers have profitable backlists, and enrolling them in an all-you-can-read subscription would cannibalise sales for a fraction of the revenue.

Judging quality in an open catalog

The absence of an editorial floor is the trade for the depth. Some of what is included is as good as anything traditionally published, and some of it has never been read by anyone other than its author. Nothing in the interface tells you which.

1. Sample the first pages. Prose quality is apparent almost immediately, and every Kindle page offers a preview.
2. Follow authors, not titles. An author who wrote one good book in this space has usually written eight, and they are usually all enrolled.
3. Read the reviews properly. Look at what the three-star reviews complain about; in genre fiction those are the most informative.
