Audible versus hoopla

hoopla costs nothing and gives you a monthly number of borrows your library decides. That number, and whether your library offers it at all, decides this comparison.

A woman using a tablet in a library

hoopla is the library service people forget they have. If your public library offers it, you already have a monthly allowance of audiobooks at no cost, and it is worth exhausting that before paying anyone anything — including us.

What hoopla is, in its own words

From hoopla's own site: “Borrow and enjoy audiobooks, eBooks, comics, movies, TV, magazines, or music everywhere you have a screen — your computer, your phone, your car, even your TV. All you need is a library card.” It adds that titles “may vary based on library catalog” and that content is “all FREE thanks to your public library”.

The important structural point is in that last phrase. Your library is paying per borrow, which is why the allowance exists and why it is set locally rather than by hoopla.

The rules that actually govern your month

hoopla's help pages are unusually specific, and these are the four facts that decide whether it covers your listening:

  • The limit is local. “This limit is set by your local library”, visible in the My hoopla section once you are signed in.
  • It resets monthly. “The monthly borrow limit resets on the first day of the new month”, and unused borrows “will not roll over into the next month”.
  • Early returns do not refund. “If you return a title early, you will not be able to check an item out in its place.” The limit is a monthly total, not a titles-at-a-time cap.
  • Loans run 21 days. “Most Audiobooks, Comics, and eBooks are available for 21 days from the time you borrow the title.”

Two more worth knowing: renewing a title “will take a borrow from your monthly limit”, and downloads for offline listening are a mobile-app feature — hoopla states that titles on Windows and macOS “are only available for streaming”.

Which one you actually want

hoopla, if it covers you. Four to eight borrows a month is a real reading habit, and if the titles you want are in the catalog then this is the whole answer at zero cost. Combine it with Libby if your library has both, since the catalogs differ and the allowances are separate — the audiobook apps compared sets out how they fit together.

Audible, when the allowance runs out. The specific failure modes are running out of borrows halfway through the month, wanting a title neither library service carries, or wanting to keep books rather than borrow them. Those are genuine reasons and the only ones we would put a subscription against.

Check your library first, because a large number of systems do not offer hoopla at all. If yours does not, the comparison you want is Audible versus Libby, and the setup for either is on how to borrow from your library.

Audible Premium Plus: what we could verify

Verified 17 September 2026

Audible Premium Plus terms as verified against Audible's own membership pricing block on 17 September 2026
Cost per month$14.95
Free trial30 days
Who can take itNew members only. Audible's own wording is that each plan offers a 30-day free trial to new members, and that eligible new members can sign up for a free trial anytime. Audible's help center adds one published window, read 24 August 2026: you will not be eligible for a free 30-day trial if you have already taken advantage of it within the last 12 months. That states an exclusion rather than a promise, so treat twelve months as the earliest point worth checking again.
Current promotionPrime members only, re-read on Audible's own site on 27 September 2026: Audible Standard at $0.99 a month for 4 months plus a $20 Audible credit, auto-renewing at $8.99 a month afterwards, offer ends October 7, 2026 at 11:59PM PT. The $20 credit was added to Audible's own banner between our 17 September and 27 September reads; the rate, the renewal rate and the end date are unchanged. This is a discounted paid membership from day one, not a longer free trial, and Audible's page does not say whether taking it uses up new-member trial eligibility. The standard 30-day free trial was still offered beside it.

What we could not confirm

  • Whether either annual plan carries the 30-day free trial. The two monthly rows on Audible's Plans & Pricing page say 'Try for $0.00' and name the trial; the two annual rows say only 'Auto-renews at ... Cancel anytime.' Audible does not state either way, so neither do we.
  • The size of the listening catalog. Catalog counts are marketing figures that change constantly and we could not confirm one against a dated source.

When the free allowance is not enough

Use the library borrows first — we earn nothing from them and they cover a lot of people entirely. If you are running out mid-month or the catalog keeps missing what you want, a trial tests whether a paid membership fixes it. Terms, and the date we last checked them, are on our Audible free trial page.

Common questions

What is hoopla?
A library service. hoopla's own site describes borrowing audiobooks, ebooks, comics, movies, TV, magazines and music, and says all you need is a library card. It is free to you because your library pays for it.
How many hoopla borrows do you get?
hoopla's help pages state that the limit 'is set by your local library', that it resets at the start of each calendar month, and that unused borrows 'will not roll over into the next month'.
Is hoopla better than Libby?
They work differently rather than one being better. Libby lends copies, so popular titles have queues. hoopla gives you a monthly allowance and most titles are available immediately, but the allowance is small and the catalog is different.
Does hoopla have waiting lists?
Sometimes. hoopla's help pages note that not all libraries offer holds, and describe a waiting, reserved, suspended and snoozed hold system for those that do. Historically it was known for instant borrowing, and much of the catalog still is.
How long do hoopla audiobook loans last?
hoopla's help pages state that most audiobooks, comics and ebooks are available for 21 days from the time you borrow. Returning early does not give you the borrow back.
