Audible versus Amazon Music Unlimited
Amazon now bundles an audiobook into its music subscription. It is a genuine benefit and a much smaller one than it sounds, and the difference is worth ten minutes.

Amazon sells audiobooks through Audible and also, now, includes one a month with its music subscription. Both facts are true, they are easily confused, and the confusion costs people a second subscription they did not need. The distinction is one audiobook a month versus a service built entirely around them.
What Amazon actually says
Verbatim from Amazon's own Music Unlimited page, read on 22 August 2026: “Free for 30 days. Audible is now included.” and, in the terms line beneath the signup button, “Auto-renews at $12.99/mo. after ($11.99/mo. for Prime members) until canceled. New subscribers only. Listen to one audiobook each month. Terms apply.” The page also describes “the largest catalog of audiobooks from Audible”.
Two things follow. The catalog behind the benefit is Audible's, so this is not a lesser library. And the allowance is one title a month, which is a real benefit stated plainly rather than an all-you-can-listen claim.
How it compares to an Audible membership
On the raw allowance, the two are closer than people expect. Audible Premium Plus is built around a monthly credit, and one credit buys one audiobook. So “one audiobook a month” is roughly the same quantity from both. What differs is everything around it.
| Amazon Music Unlimited | Audible Premium Plus | |
|---|---|---|
| Audiobook allowance | “Listen to one audiobook each month” | A monthly credit, spendable on any title in the store |
| Stated monthly price | $12.99, or $11.99 for Prime members | $14.95 a month |
| Do you keep the title? | Amazon's page does not say. We will not guess. | Audible states credit purchases are yours to keep forever |
| Music included | Yes — it is a music service | No |
| Free trial | “Free for 30 days”, new subscribers only | 30 days, new members only |
The keeping question is the one that matters most over time. A credit purchase survives cancellation; the reasoning and the limits are on what happens to your books when you cancel, and the mechanics are on how Audible credits work.
Who should choose which
Take the music bundle if you want a music subscription anyway and one audiobook a month is enough. That is a perfectly reasonable listening habit, and paying twice for overlapping things is the classic Amazon mistake.
Take Audible if audiobooks are the main event: more than one a month, a wish list you are working through, or a wish to own what you buy. The distinction between titles you keep and titles you access is the whole structural difference between the two.
Take neither if your library covers what you want. That remains the honest first answer on this site, and Audible versus Libby makes the case for it properly.
Check what you are already paying for
Amazon sells several overlapping things and signs you into all of them with one account, which is exactly how people end up with two audiobook benefits and no idea. Before adding anything, look at your Amazon subscriptions and see what is already there. What Prime actually includes for readers is the same exercise for the Prime side, where the confusion is even more common, and whether Audible is free with Prime answers the specific question people arrive with.
We are not paid if you subscribe to Amazon Music. This site earns a flat fee on Audible and Kindle Unlimited trial signups only, which is also why the Amazon Music link on this page is a plain untagged one.
Audible Premium Plus: what we could verify
Verified 17 September 2026
| Cost per month | $14.95 |
|---|---|
| Free trial | 30 days |
| Who can take it | New members only. Audible's own wording is that each plan offers a 30-day free trial to new members, and that eligible new members can sign up for a free trial anytime. Audible's help center adds one published window, read 24 August 2026: you will not be eligible for a free 30-day trial if you have already taken advantage of it within the last 12 months. That states an exclusion rather than a promise, so treat twelve months as the earliest point worth checking again. |
| Current promotion | Prime members only, re-read on Audible's own site on 27 September 2026: Audible Standard at $0.99 a month for 4 months plus a $20 Audible credit, auto-renewing at $8.99 a month afterwards, offer ends October 7, 2026 at 11:59PM PT. The $20 credit was added to Audible's own banner between our 17 September and 27 September reads; the rate, the renewal rate and the end date are unchanged. This is a discounted paid membership from day one, not a longer free trial, and Audible's page does not say whether taking it uses up new-member trial eligibility. The standard 30-day free trial was still offered beside it. |
Checked against Audible's own membership pricing block on 17 September 2026. How we check these.
What we could not confirm
- Whether either annual plan carries the 30-day free trial. The two monthly rows on Audible's Plans & Pricing page say 'Try for $0.00' and name the trial; the two annual rows say only 'Auto-renews at ... Cancel anytime.' Audible does not state either way, so neither do we.
- The size of the listening catalog. Catalog counts are marketing figures that change constantly and we could not confirm one against a dated source.

If one book a month is not enough
That is the honest dividing line between these two. If you are reliably finishing more than one audiobook a month, or you want to keep what you buy, the membership built for it is the better fit. The terms, and the date we last checked them, are on our Audible free trial page.
